This course is an introduction to the development of music therapy, including the history of the profession globally, in Canada, and at Capilano University. Readings and discussion will discuss traditional schools of therapy, pioneers, and current practitioners. Readings and discussion of clinical work with older adults will introduce theoretical constructs, applied models, person-centered approaches, and issues of relevance. To deepen understanding of the values, practices, challenges and ethics of therapy, students reflect on their life experience as it relates to material in this course.
