This course examines the sociological dimensions of mental health, focusing on how power, social location, and historical context shape outcomes and experiences. Using the sociological imagination, students will explore how factors such as class, gender, race, and colonial histories influence mental well-being. The course critically engages with the medicalization of mental health and highlights the impacts of structural inequalities and social forces.

Prerequisites

45 credits of 100-level or higher coursework including SOC 100 or SOC 101
